Strategic Guidance & Counsel

Meeting immediate needs in order to safeguard an older person, while looking ahead to plan for increasing care, can be daunting.

Elder Life provides professional, fact based knowledge and practical counsel to make informed decisions on a wide range of senior issues and care choices.

Our team members are skilled in addressing client and family challenges. We assist in resolving concerns that require consensus.

We support clients in making objective decisions ensuring optimal independence, dignity, safety and comfort.

Conversations may include areas such as: accommodation, communication, medical support, family support, socialization, and mobilization. Potential changes, whether major or minor, are evaluated and our recommendations are based on addressing individual needs and benefit quality of life.

Based on various circumstances we may advise, counsel and recommend trusted professionals to provide adjunct services such as mental health consultations, grief counseling, legal and financial advice regarding powers of attorney, will, representation agreements and directives of care, estate planning.

Real estate evaluations and services, downsizing and or modifications to existing housing may be suggested in addition to personal and therapeutic referrals such as dental, visual or hearing care, physical care, occupational or massage therapy.

Our facilitation process is highly effective; its purpose is to recognize the family support available, cost of service, potential funding opportunities, willingness to accept change and the immediacy of action required.

We may recommend different accommodations. In those cases, we’re able to provide a detailed comparison of suitable housing and care options available in a particular community. Our team can arrange visits and accompaniment for our clients, if requested.

We provide an unbiased review of such service providers and we recommend a short list of professionals we trust and believe will serve our client’s best interests.

Assessment & Recommendations

Our professional assessment begins by establishing trust and emotional comfort.

We don’t conduct formal interrogations or clinical tests; however we may suggest testing, if warranted.

Our process is conversational and friendly as we make macro observations that encompass areas such as on-going health issues, levels of hydration, nutrition, hygiene, mobility, sociability, general awareness and orientation.

This participatory style provides us with an understanding of our client’s day to day ability to function in such areas as shopping, preparing meals, doing basic house work, paying bills, communicating by phone or computer, taking medication as prescribed.

Our assessment also includes driving safety, care of pets and management of domestic hazards such as stove, iron, spills, space design, tripping hazards and household security.

We can help ascertain if an older parent is expending a great deal of energy managing their home situation.  If so, we can support family members in determining when and how to intervene.

The results of our assessment are presented in person, by Skype, telephone or e-mail and include a written report.

We will consider budget and any other circumstances that have been identified and  collaborate with our client, their family or a person responsible, to reach an agreement for both a short and long term strategy.

When home-based services are required from Elder Life In Home Care, we’ll develop a detailed care plan including a budget.
